The 6th iteration of Young Curators, New Ideas will take place as part of Detroit Art Week, an annual celebration of contemporary art in Detroit. In 2008, Detroit Art Week Co-Founder, Amani Olu, established Young Curators, New Ideas to promote and support emerging curatorial practices. Young Curators, New Ideas VI will take place from Wednesday, July 15 to Sunday, July 19, 2020 at Trumbull & Porter Detroit Hotel.
Featuring 12 independent curators, Young Curators, New Ideas VI will shine a light on the cultural, artistic, social and political transformations initiated by Black, POC, women, LGBTQ and gender variant people through their creative, and at times independent, curatorial practices. With a sense of relevance and urgency, these multifaceted and dynamic micro-exhibitions consider contemporary issues that exist at the intersection of curatorial practice and artistic production. Within a 320 square-foot hotel room, each curator will present one artist whose work is a thoughtful and provocative exploration on the most pressing issues of our time.
Since its inception, Young Curators, New Ideas has presented exhibitions by 43 independent curators featuring 120 artists.
YCNI alums include: Karen Archey, Curator of Contemporary Art for Time-Based Media at Stedelijk Museum; Erin Dziedzic, Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art; Stamatina Gregory, Associate Dean of the School of Art at The Cooper Union; Jenny Jaskey, Director of The Artists’ Institute; Larry Ossei-Mensah, Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit; Laura Ptak, Executive Director and Curator of Art in General; Stephanie Roach, Director of The Flag Art Foundation; Jose Ruiz, Director of the MFA in Curatorial Practice program at the Maryland Institute College of Art; Legacy Russell, Associate Curator at Studio Museum in Harlem; Andrew Russeth, Deputy Editor at Surface; Lumi Tan, Curator at The Kitchen; and Cleopatra’s [Bridget Donahue, Bridget Finn, Kate McNamara & Erin Somerville] to name a few.

⎯ There is no age restriction.
⎯ We will only accept proposals for one-person exhibitions only. We will not consider proposals for group exhibitions.
⎯ We will give extra consideration to proposals that fit the exhibition’s theme of inclusion and diversity and engage viewers in a thoughtful and provocative discussion on the most pressing issues of our time. – There is no room rental fee for curators
– Curators are not required to sign a consignment agreement
– Participants are NOT allowed to sleep in the room in which they are exhibiting
– Participants cannot install any artwork on the wall of the hotel room. No exceptions.
– Participants must pay a refundable $500 room damage deposit
– Complimentary Wi-Fi available
– The following are the costs for the hotel to manage shipping and handling of your packages: $15.00 for 25lb or less, $50.00 for 26lbs or less and $75.00 for 61lbs or less
– There is no room rental fee for curators

If you want to move furniture, you must request to do so with the Director of Sales & Building Engineer to confirm if moving or rearranging furniture is possible. Please note that there will be an additional fee to move or rearrange furniture. Should your room need excessive cleaning, you will need to pay a cleaning fee.
CAN I SLEEP IN THE ROOM IN WHICH I AM EXHIBITING?
No, curators are not allowed to sleep in the rooms. That said, for $124 per night (plus tax, etc.) you can book a room across the hall from the room in which you’ll be exhibiting.
WHAT ARE THE ROOM DIMENSIONS?
Exact dimensions vary, yet each room is 320 square feet with 8 feet ceilings. Each room has an outdoor patio. Some rooms have a king bed, others have two queen size beds. Two of the rooms have a jacuzzi. You will have an option to select the best room for your exhibition, but we cannot guarantee a particular room. For a fee, it be possible to have the beds removed. HERE ARE THE FLOOR PLANS FOR THE THREE ROOMS.
WHAT ARE INSTALL/DE-INSTALL DAYS?
Monday, July 13 and Tuesday, July 14. De-installation will take place on Sunday, July 19 from 6 p.m. on. You must vacate the room by Monday, July 20 at 11 a.m.
